About this event: I Can, I Will...Step Up, Stop the Violence March

The violence in Philadelphia is bad...very bad...people out of the blue getting hurt and kiling people for no reason. Sometimes there is a reason but there’s no reason for a person to kill another person.
Like my hood if you walk down the street and you don’t live down there u would get jumped are getting ran out the hood. The act of violence in Philadelphia is horrible, we need to be ashamed about how we acing because it’s unneeded.

I realize NYC is 6 times the size of Philadelphia but in 2005 NYC had 4 times as many violent crimes as Philly, but you never hear about NYC being an unsafe place to live. If NYC has 40,000 violent crimes per year and Philly’s has 10,000 violent crimes, in reality which place is more unsafe? I could show you a crime map of NYC, Chicago, DC, and La that would make you never want to step within 1000 miles of those cities.

Crime is everywhere in the cities. Certain sections are where 95% of the crimes take place. Is there spillover into what are seemingly safe neighborhoods? Yes but its exception not the norm. Just like Manhattan is going to be safer than parts of the Bronx/Queens, Center City is going to be safer than West/North Philly

Statistically you're more likely to die in a car crash driving around in suburbia than you are to die as an innocent victim of gun violence in the city.

(You're also much more likely to die on the drive to the airport than you are in the plane. People fear irrational phenomena because they don't feel in control of their lives, not because of actual risk analysis.)

As for Philly's housing values, it's not "worth it" to live anywhere but the exurban fringe of a Sunbelt city (say, Phoenix) if you're doing a strictly economic comparison of housing prices and incomes. But people value intangibles (culture, lifestyles, family). That's why people pay $2,000 a month for apartments the size of boxes in Manhattan. They're not crazy; they're just putting value in other things.

Philadelphia's housing has been historically undervalued when compared to its peers in the Northeast (NY, Boston, DC). Philly's basically playing catch-up now

Fear of teen pregnancy
Related to country: United States

I would like to analize why teens are getting pregnant? There are too many fears that come to my mind when i think of young girls lacking direction. What can I do to stop teens from getting pregnant and focusing on finishing school? Should there be more programs out there, like going to different schools informing young girls to abstain from such activities? What role can a morther play in promoting responsible , and positve social behavior ?

Where do missing people go?

Over a month ago, a family friend, 47 years old, was with his family and calmly asked his parents for some money. They gave him $60. He told everyone he was going to the cottage. That was the last time anyone saw Bob.

Every time I ride the subway, another face is flashed across the screens installed in the stations. Today, it’s sadly the same kid who I saw on the screen last year. The people on these bulletins have usually been missing for five years or more. Is there even a point of searching for them anymore?

I always wondered how the police could not find a missing person. Perhaps they did not wish to be found, but many of the faces I saw were only kids. They could have at least sent a letter saying they were okay.

Being so close to this investigation gave me a grim look into the search for a missing person. With no transactions on bank accounts and no sightings since leaving Toronto, there were no leads for police to follow. After a month of investigation, police divers searching the waters close to the cottage and countless friends searching surrounding areas and camp areas, everyone came up empty.

The question begs: Where is his silver Honda? Where is Bob? And why can no one find him?

Will online social networks ever become manditory?
About this category: Technology

I was thinking about this the other day. Similar to MySpace, a social networking site that many North Americans will likely be familiar with is a site called Facebook. Facebook was originally created specifically for university students to network, send messages and share photos, among other things. At one time, it was only open to university students and you could only signup using your registered school email account.

While not all of my friends have Facebook, those who don't login using other user's accounts to check what is happening regularly -- without doing it, you find yourself out of the loop on friend's lives. This just goes to prove that right now, Facebook is essential to most student's social lives.

Today, anyone can join -- students at any age level, adults, teens and even those who are not attending school. I find now that more than ever, my life revolves around Facebook. Want to know what everyone is up to this weekend? Check Facebook. Want to see photos from the other night? Check Facebook. Need to message your friend who isn't online? GO TO FACEBOOK.

I find that increasingly, it becomes a central place for friends to meet online and share what is going on. Without it, those who are not already insanely social miss out.

Similar to checking email and phone messages, most students today seem to login to Facebook at least once per day -- and that's just the start. More and more frequently now, people will reply faster on Facebook than to emails, especially when it comes to social interaction and with that, people are on MSN less often.

What I wonder is this: Will there be a day when online social networks such as Facebook, MySpace or even TIG will become a manditory part of your day? Let me know what you think!

International Visitors Come to SOTF

We were blessed with five guest from different countries. We were blessed by people from Egypt, Rosseta, Jordon, Malaysia, Algeria. They were teachers all english teachers. While they were here they just got a basic input on what we do here and how we live and learn. We also had the oppurtunity to ask them questions about the places they were from and and get the basic foundation of their cultures and their learning engagements.
After our discussion we had a chance to take them to our main projects and give them a little insight on how we learn. They got to sit in these rooms and interact with the students for about 20 minutes. Once their twenty minutes were up we gave them a tour through our school so they get to see our enviroment. In the afternoon the tour guides had a chance to sit and talk to them on a one on one bases as they ate lunch. When lunch was over unfortunately we had to say good bye to our visitors.

The World Comes to School of the Future
About this category: Education

Today on the 5th day of February 5 people from 4 different countries came to visit us here at the School of the Future. It was 4 male teachers and 1 female. They were all English teachers. This was the 1st time for some of them to ever come to the US. They are here for until June. For the next six weeks they will be at the School of the Future observing the learners as well as the educators. They all speak at least two languages some even four. Therefore they will be helping the learners learn their new languages.

They came today, talked one on one with about 11 learners and had a tour of the new school. They spent some time in some of the classes and got to see how some of the learners act. They got to see how our school differs in many ways. They got to go to the gym and they enjoyed there selves. They played basket ball and did some pull ups. They really had fun. They had lunch with 11 learners and left at about 12:30.

About this event: 2006 United Nations Conference on Human Rights Migration and Development

it saying in the story tat all kids will grow up in be some thing it do not matter where you come from.it's also say that kids should have the same rights as adult and if you are in a community where kids are aposed to be seen not heard it is hard for them to get there rights.i also thing that kids should have the same right because childen are getting more better at being good so we should have more rights.

About this event: 2006 United Nations Conference on Human Rights Migration and Development

I read about the trafficing in the labor section. it was about how the parents would sell there choldren for types of money. It was also about how they would sell them for the least amount of money like for five dollors. I read that there was a mother that sold the 3 childrenm for $180 dollors to a fisherman.
why do they sell there children?
IF THEY ARE CAUDGHT WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
how do the kids live after being sold?

My Assignment for Ms. A
About this event: 2006 United Nations Conference on Human Rights Migration and Development

Sub-Saharan Africans are increasingly migrating to North African countries. United States has always been a nation of immigrants while others believe illegal entry and threats to national security are unprecedented. Nicolas Sarkozy succeeded in passing a law that he argues will finally allow the government to control immigration.

Why does the United States accept Immigrants ?

What lead to Immigrants ?

Why do they migrate ?

Voluntary and Involuntary Migration
About this event: 2006 United Nations Conference on Human Rights Migration and Development

The article I read was about Voluntary and Involuntary migration. It was basically talking about the different reasons why immigrants eave ther home palces and move to different places voluntary or involuntary. So they gave and example of a girl named Tina who was 27 years old. They talked about how she lefft Uganda to find her boyfriend, but where she lived was falling apart anyway; She went to go find her boyfriend in Manchester. Also how the girl Tina made it and found her boyfriend and she sent backserveral thousand pounds back to Uganda to plot land and herold house to be knocked down. This is basicallywhat this one article was about. This would be a case of voluntary migration because she wanted to leave where she lived. But some involuntary migration moght be because of natural disasters or life or death situations.
